Overloaded Truck Fined Over 7 Million VND on Vietnam’s Highway After Exceeding Load Limits by 126%

Truck Overloaded by 126% Sparks Immediate Enforcement Action on Highway

On April 4, officers from the Highways Traffic Police Department 6 intercepted a semi-trailer truck carrying goods on the Vĩnh Hảo–Phan Thiết highway, near the Chợ Lầu interchange. The vehicle, operated by 47-year-old driver N.V.Đ. from Ho Chi Minh City’s Lái Thiêu district, was found to be carrying cargo exceeding its registered load limit by 126%.

The inspection, conducted using a mobile scale, revealed the truck’s weight had surpassed legal thresholds by nearly a quarter of its total capacity. This marked the first major enforcement action in the region since new weight monitoring protocols were introduced earlier this year. The incident occurred during peak traffic hours, raising concerns about road safety and infrastructure strain.

Officers noted that the overloaded truck’s tires were visibly worn, and its braking system showed signs of excessive wear. The location of the stop, near a critical junction, highlighted the potential for catastrophic accidents if the vehicle had continued without intervention. Authorities emphasized that the case would serve as a precedent for stricter enforcement of weight regulations in the coming months.

Driver and Company Face Heavy Fines for Violating Load Regulations

Driver N.V.Đ. was issued a fine of 7.5 million VND and docked 8 points on his license for violating transportation laws. The truck’s owner, HTX TM A.D., was also penalized 70 million VND for failing to adhere to load limits.

These fines are among the highest levied under Vietnam’s recent traffic regulations, which aim to deter commercial vehicles from exceeding weight limits. The penalties reflect the severity of the violation, as overloaded trucks are a leading cause of road accidents and bridge collapses nationwide. The enforcement action followed a series of similar incidents in the region, prompting authorities to escalate inspections.

Officials stated that the case would be used to demonstrate the consequences of non-compliance, particularly for companies that prioritize profit over safety. Both the driver and the company are required to attend a mandatory safety training session, which will cover proper load distribution and legal responsibilities. This marks a shift toward stricter accountability for commercial transport operators.

New 24/7 Weight Control Stations to Prevent Future Overloads

To address recurring violations, authorities announced plans to install 24/7 weight control stations along the Vĩnh Hảo–Dầu Giây highway corridor. These stations will use advanced sensors and automated systems to detect overloaded vehicles in real time, eliminating the need for manual inspections. The initiative aims to reduce human error and ensure compliance with legal weight limits, which are critical for road safety and infrastructure preservation.

The new checkpoints will also integrate with existing toll systems and smart traffic management networks, enabling seamless data sharing between agencies. Officials emphasized that the goal is to create a deterrent system where overloaded vehicles are immediately flagged and denied access to the highway. This move aligns with broader national efforts to modernize traffic enforcement and reduce the risk of accidents caused by excessive cargo.

Conclusion

The enforcement of strict weight limits on Vietnam’s highways underscores the growing priority of road safety over commercial efficiency. As new monitoring systems expand, the case of the overloaded truck serves as both a warning and a catalyst for systemic change in transport regulation. The challenge now lies in ensuring these measures are consistently applied to prevent future incidents.
